Corrected for distance, HIP 418 outproduces Tau Phe by some 1.4 times, absolute magnitudes −0.93 and −0.59. Only 593 light-years separate the Sun from Tau Phe; HIP 418 sits 1.2 times further out at 723. To the unaided eye Tau Phe leads at magnitude +5.71 to +5.80, a gap of 0.09 worth about 1.1 times the light of HIP 418.
