### Precession and the Shifting Zodiac

The Earth's axis wobbles with a period of approximately 25,772 years (axial precession). When the zodiac was codified around 500 BCE, the vernal equinox fell in Aries. Today, it falls in Pisces and is slowly moving toward Aquarius — the origin of the "Age of Aquarius" concept.

### The Thirteenth Constellation

The Sun also passes through **Ophiuchus** (the Serpent-Bearer) between November 30 and December 17, but it was excluded from the traditional twelve-sign system. Ophiuchus contains Barnard's Star, the fourth-closest star to the Sun at 5.96 light-years.

### Babylonian Origins

The Babylonian MUL.APIN tablets (c. 1000 BCE) list 17 constellations along the ecliptic. By 500 BCE, these were standardized to twelve 30-degree segments — a mathematical convenience for their base-60 system. The Greek astronomer Ptolemy later incorporated them into his Almagest (c. 150 CE), preserving the system for Western astronomy.
