A pair-instability supernova occurs in extremely massive stars (roughly 130-250 solar masses) when gamma rays in the core produce electron-positron pairs, reducing radiation pressure and triggering runaway thermonuclear burning. The explosion is so powerful it may completely disrupt the star, leaving no remnant.
