Molecular clouds are the densest phase of the interstellar medium, composed primarily of molecular hydrogen (H₂) and dust at temperatures of 10-30 K. They are the raw material of star formation; giant molecular clouds can contain millions of solar masses of gas and span hundreds of light-years.
