Intrinsically among the most luminous stars in this group, with an absolute magnitude of −4.42, Saiph appears at only apparent magnitude 2.07 because it lies far off, some 647 light-years away. It is a hot blue-white B-type star, its colour index of −0.168 signalling a high surface temperature. Saiph carries the Kappa designation in Orion and marks one of the corners of that constellation's prominent rectangular figure. Despite ranking below Orion's brighter luminaries in Earth's sky, its great distance conceals a genuinely powerful star, its apparent faintness relative to nearby Rigel a consequence of geometry rather than any lack of intrinsic brilliance.
