Avior shines with an absolute magnitude of −4.48, an intrinsic luminosity far above the Sun's that carries it across some 605 light-years to an apparent magnitude of 1.86. Designated Epsilon Carinae, it is a bright member of the southern constellation Carina and an orange K-type star, its warm colour reflected in a B–V index of 1.196. A southern declination of −59° keeps Avior below the horizon for most northern observers. It counts among the navigational stars of the southern sky, a distinctly orange light within the star-rich reaches of Carina and the southern Milky Way.
