Eta Ursae Majoris, known as Alkaid, is the star at the very end of the Plough's handle in the constellation Ursa Major. A blue-white B-type star, it carries a negative B–V index of −0.099 and appears at apparent magnitude 1.85 from a distance of 104 light-years. Its absolute magnitude of −0.67 marks an intrinsic luminosity above the Sun's. At a northern declination of +49° Alkaid is circumpolar from much of the northern hemisphere. As the tip of the handle, it is the Plough star farthest from the Pointer end, tracing the outermost sweep of the familiar figure.
