Procyon lies just 11.5 light-years from the Sun, a closeness that raises it to apparent magnitude 0.4 despite a fairly ordinary intrinsic brightness. Its absolute magnitude of 2.67 places it only a little above solar output. Catalogued as Alpha Canis Minoris, the yellow-white F-type star is the brightest point of the constellation Canis Minor and shows a B–V colour index of 0.432. An almost equatorial declination of +5° makes Procyon accessible from nearly anywhere on Earth. Together with nearby Sirius it flanks the winter Milky Way, and its prominence — like that of its brighter neighbour — owes far more to proximity than to exceptional stellar power.
