Alpha Gruis, known as Alnair, is the brightest star of the southern constellation Grus, the crane. A blue-white B-type star, it registers a slightly negative B–V index of −0.07 and appears at apparent magnitude 1.73 from a distance of 101 light-years. Its absolute magnitude of −0.72 shows an intrinsic luminosity above the Sun's. Set at a southern declination of −46°, Alnair sits low for most northern observers while standing prominent in the southern spring sky, where it leads the scattered stars of Grus below the autumn figure of Piscis Austrinus.
