Algieba is designated Gamma-1 Leonis, the primary component of the Gamma system in the constellation Leo, and is also recorded as 41 Leonis. Its orange K-type classification and colour index of 1.128 mark it as an evolved star radiating strongly in the red. At apparent magnitude 2.01 it ranks among the notable stars of the Lion, while its distance of about 130 light-years and absolute magnitude of −0.99 indicate a genuine luminosity exceeding that of ordinary orange dwarfs. The star sits along the curve of stars forming the Lion's mane, a recognisable asterism of the northern spring sky, where its warm colour contrasts with the whiter light of the constellation's other bright members.
