Hill Sphere

The Hill sphere (Roche sphere) is the region around a body within which its gravity dominates over that of the more massive parent it orbits. Moons must orbit within the Hill sphere to remain bound; for Earth it extends about 1.5 million km, well beyond the Moon's orbit.
