Naos

Naos belongs to the rare O spectral class, the hottest and bluest category of stars, a nature underscored by its strongly negative colour index of −0.269. It holds the Zeta designation of Puppis, the Stern, in the southern sky. Among the most remote of the bright stars at about 1,084 light-years, Naos nonetheless reaches apparent magnitude 2.21, sustained by an exceptional absolute magnitude of −5.40 — the greatest intrinsic luminosity of any star in this group. Its combination of extreme temperature and prodigious output makes it a notable example of the short-lived, high-mass stars that populate the O class, few of which are visible to the unaided eye.
