Lying about 66 light-years from the Sun, Hamal is one of the nearer orange giants among the bright stars and the leading light of Aries, where it holds the Alpha designation. Its K-type spectrum and colour index of 1.151 give it the warm orange tone characteristic of cooler evolved stars. Hamal reaches apparent magnitude 2.01, and with an absolute magnitude of 0.49 its intrinsic brightness is only moderately above solar-type levels — a reflection of both its relative proximity and its more restrained luminosity compared with the distant supergiants. As the Alpha star of the Ram, it is the constellation's principal naked-eye feature.
