Gamma Orionis, called Bellatrix, marks one shoulder of the constellation Orion and is a blue-white B-type star with a hot, negative B–V index of −0.224. It shines at apparent magnitude 1.64 from a distance of some 252 light-years, and its absolute magnitude of −2.8 indicates an intrinsic luminosity well beyond the Sun's. Positioned near the celestial equator at declination +6°, Bellatrix is visible from nearly everywhere on Earth. Together with Betelgeuse it forms the upper pair of Orion's rectangular figure, its cooler blue-white light contrasting with the red shoulder opposite.
