Carbon Star

Carbon stars are cool giant stars (spectral type C) with more carbon than oxygen in their atmospheres, resulting from mixing of carbon-rich material from nuclear burning to the surface. The excess carbon forms molecules and soot grains that give them a deep reddish color.
